Bienvenue to the land of Ch’ti – The dialect of the North of France

Whereas the northern dialects (shown mainly in yellow and green on the map) which include Standard French are known collectively as Langues d’oïl, the southern family of French dialects shown in shades of red on the map taken as a whole is known as the Occitan language, which is a language similar to Catalan. However this is barely relevant today as very few people still speak Occitan or any dialect other than Standard French. Note that the following languages which are also spoken in some parts of France are not dialects of French but completely separate languages: Breton, Basque, Alsatian (actually a dialect of German), Flemish (also technically a dialect of German) and Catalan (this one is arguable, given its closeness to Occitan).
