Bordeaux winegrowers pin hopes on June bloom to save harvest

A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department, with a total vineyard area of over 120,000 hectares, making it the largest wine growing area in France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious bottles of exquisite beverage.

Key Takeaways:

  • An April freeze damaged grapevines in southwest France. The freeze was widespread, also effecting vineyards in Germany and Italy.
  • The vines will begin blooming in June, and then winegrowers can determine the extent of the damage, and how it will effect this years’ wine production.
  • Only 15 percent of France’s vineyards are insured. An abundant harvest last year may help some of the winegrowers to offset potential losses this year.

“To survive this bad patch, help is on hand for winegrowers in the form of partial unemployment benefits, aid for social charges and financial support from local authorities.”
