The profession in general has shifted in recent years from the standoffish wine connoisseur seen in restaurants dressed in black to more approachable experts that wear tattoos and post their recommendations online. These “super somms” are enjoying success in the U.S. and the UK and “have become the wine counterpart to celebrity chefs.” In the U.S., the popularity of the 2013 documentary Somm has helped shine a new light on the profession and drive its hype.
