It took two years of excavating for Daleau to reveal the true jewels of this ancient refuge: walls covered in rock engravings. During these years of shoveling muck and maintaining notebooks, Daleau identified seven layers of earth inside the cave. Humans had likely carved images onto cave walls between 28,000 and 35,000 years ago. Although the carnivorous Paleolithic diet at the time these carvings took place included ample meat from reindeer, these animals are curiously absent from cave images.
