Marketing Coach
5 Tips For Picking The Right One For You

When hiring a marketing coach, look for an expert who can provide real value.

By way of introduction, let's consider the type of expert business you wish to own.

There are two types.
1: A competition-driven business
2: A story-driven business.

The first wants to crush it (oh, how that phrase makes my skin crawl) and be number one. They want to beat the competition. They want to be the biggest and the best. And they don't care so much about how they do so.

The second is customer-focused. Loves to tell relevant stories that resonate with their audience. Wants to serve their customers to the best of their ability and want to do so even before money has changed hands.

As a marketing coach, I want to work with customers who want to build a story-driven business.

Here are those 5 tips for picking the right one for you...

First, their offer has to be focused on solving the problem you think you have?

This is about making sure you get true value for money. Hiring a marketing coach who offers a smorgasbord of different opportunities, is ill-advised.

That pre-supposes you have done your own homework and have truly identified what you want to achieve...

Not in some wishy-washy sort of way but in detail.

Discard anyone whose offer is not focused on that one thing.

Second, have they gotten the results you seek for other folks just like you?

This is about picking a specialist.

If you want to grow your income to 5 figures a month without spending a dime on advertising, pick a marketing coach who can level up your storytelling.

If you want to grow a durable business that does not rely on you being there every single hour of every single day, say so.

And then pick a marketing coach whose number one area of expertise is doing just that (and nothing else).

Third, their values and beliefs should align with yours

This may seem obvious now that you see it in black and white on your screen.  I have come across many coaches whose real priority was revenue, not great results.

My own hard-won experience tells me that you have to resist this pressure.

You don't have to make a decision immediately.

When you do, it has to feel right...

You may come across a marketing coach who, at first glance, seems to push all the right buttons (and they should, that's what good marketing does)... but take your time, do your due diligence, and explore their world before making a decision to hire them.

As the old saying goes... "act in haste, repent at leisure"

Or to put it another way, if you make a hasty decision, you'll have plenty of time to regret the mistake later...

Fourth, commit 110% to doing the work required.

It's not your marketing coach's job to accept missed deadlines or lack of commitment from you.

Your marketing coach is your guide.
They are there to fast-track your success.

They are not there to do the work for you.

If that's what you want, hire a marketing agency. Be prepared to go at their speed and adopt a marketing strategy that suits them first and you second.

Never, ever hire out your marketing strategy.
You are the only one that should dictate this.

And that is what your marketing coach is there to help you develop.

So, once you commit to hiring a marketing coach, commit 110% to do the work.

That is the only way that you will get maximum value from the experience.

And finally, it's not their job to be your friend, although they may be very friendly.

In conclusion, when it comes to hiring a marketing coach, make sure they are clear about the relationship that you are about to establish...

As your marketing coach, it's their job… To be that ONE person in your life who helps YOU move the needle. Who helps you figure out how you create the BIG breakthrough you want so FREAKING badly!

It's their job to hold YOU accountable and be there through good times and bad.

To be there for you when you feel lost and confused and be there at the finishing line urging you to keep moving forward.

NO, it's not their job to be your friend (altho’ we may become friends)

It is their job to hold space for you.

It’s their job to coax you to expand your horizons and ask questions that challenge you to find your own answers.

Nothing else matters.

This is the only way you will achieve what you have set out to do.

You may feel pressure.
In fact, you create that pressure yourself.

Their job is to serve you to the best of their ability.

That includes not giving you a free pass.
And making sure you do your best work.

You would not expect them to settle for anything less.
There will never be a perfect time to go on this journey.

So I encourage you to stop waiting to feel ready.

You are ready, right now.

Say it with me…

"I am ready to go on this journey with you. I’m ready to commit to growing a story-driven business that puts my values and my client’s beliefs before profit. I am ready to commit to the possibility of my own greatness."

It's your life.

Stop putting it off!

PS: As an expert business owner, you have to be a leader for your audience. That means you have to be ready to step into your power. Be the person, you promised yourself you would be. Going on this journey will entail meeting many challenges. Being forced out of your comfort zone.

Know this... The person who sets the goal is never the one who achieves it.  They will have grown and become a different person along the journey

PPS: Here are 10 hard-won tips for growing a coaching business that will help expert businesses too.

I chose to work with Rory for his great personality, clarity and expertise. Still, I got way more than I expected. He coached me through a deep marketing process and my outcome was way beyond what I had expected. It had to do a lot with Rory's strong focus and his ability to understand me and my customers. Rory became a good friend that I will always come back to when I need advice about online marketing and how to build better customer relationships.

As a presentation professional, part of my core proposition is that I take a client’s idea and transform it into a compelling story and presentation. This is exactly what Rory did for my marketing messaging. He understood immediately what I wanted to communicate. Rory has a wide breadth of knowledge in all aspects of online marketing. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him.

What I like working with Rory, is his excellent sense for what is important, step by step. He gives me the structure to do the work I need to do, he is giving excellent feedback and at the same time he honors, that in the end I have to decide how the content of my campaign should look like. He is an excellent sparring - partner and a pragmatic coach, who always points to the simple but effective solutions.

Rory is currently helping build my Life Coaching business, and that includes identifying a target market that I connect with, learning how to speak their language, creating products and services catered to my target market, and creating a minimal viable funnel that will help me market.

My journey with Rory has been really great. He understands me and what I want to deliver, he is a great mentor by seeing the answers within me, and works with me to bring those answers out. If you are feeling stuck in terms of marketing yourself or product/service, Rory is the go to man!

Boomer Digital is unique because it breaks mindsets that tell us in an older generation that " normal " for me is time to finish . But I am loaded with ideas and inspiration. Boomer Digital is a coach of my generation roaring to me to finish the race with glory not rust out before the starting gun fires.

Just yesterday I became positively irritated about starting out a business. The only available resources were outside my dreams and interests. Here if I don't find the resources I need I see something close enough.

Alan Bowman

I strongly recommend Rory as a strategy and marketing coach for his candid and skilful approach. He’s currently helping me to set up my business and I am finally making good progress with it. Methodology is clear and straightforward and every conversation with Rory represents a major step forward in my journey as he helps me focus, make informed decisions, and move closer to my goal.
